Chance of censorship in the PT government is zero, says Senator Jaques Wagner to CNN

For Senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), the chance of censorship in the Workers’ Party (PT) government is “zero”. The statement was made during an interview with CNN this Wednesday (9).

Citing an agenda already defended by former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Wagner explained that there is a need for regulation of what he called “communication using modern methodology” – in tools such as WhatsApp and Facebook.

According to him, there are regulations provided for in laws for what is broadcast in the “traditional” press, such as print media and television.

The comment came after the case of youtuber Monark, who defended the existence of a Nazi party on Monday (7) during the broadcast of a podcast he presented. The event caused outrage, and the presenter was disconnected from the production on Tuesday (8).

After repudiating the youtuber’s speech, Wagner said that “in relation to the traditional press, I don’t think it has to regulate anything, because there are already legal resources for that”. Speaking about the regulation of the new media, Wagner stated that “all of us who defend democracy want to make this regulation”.

Elections 2022

The senator also commented on the performance of former president Lula in the current electoral polls. Wagner pointed out that it is very difficult to make a prediction that the elections will be resolved in the first round. For him, this scenario would be more likely if the polarization intensifies between PT and Bolsonaro.

“I think that if the election becomes extremely polarized between the two [Bolsonaro e Lula] then I think you can [resultado em] first round, but, I repeat, this depends a little on the performance of the other candidates”, he pointed out.

For Wagner, voters are not yet focused on the elections, but “concerned with jobs, health, income and security” and that it will only be possible to make a more accurate picture with the beginning of election advertisements, as polls show a “photograph of today ”, which can change.

Still, the senator said he believes the former president is a strong candidate for the elections. “Brazil needs, today, a great conciliator. I honestly don’t know another person who has the art, be a political tailor like Lula,” he said.

Analyzing the former president’s performance, Wagner said that Lula “signals that he wants to have a vice-president who is complementary to him”, citing Geraldo Alckmin. According to him, this is due to the attempt to penetrate sectors and social groups that the former president does not have much reach.

THE CNNJaques Wagner also said he believes that the issue of corruption will not be the main agenda in these elections, unlike in 2018.

“I think the central theme of this election is prosperity and hope, which is why he [Lula] is so good, he represents that for most of the Brazilian population. People want to know if they are going to have jobs, income, productive inclusion, if their children are going to be able to thrive,” he said.

“I am not afraid of this issue now in the 2022 election. I can calmly say that the PT was both responsible for anti-corruption legislation and that it became clear that the attack on the PT on the people of Lula and Dilma was a farce mounted with a political bias” , added.

Wagner believes that Lula, in an eventual victory, should focus on the social and environmental issue, but understanding that the economy is important.

THE CNN will hold the first presidential debate of 2022. The confrontation between the candidates will be broadcast live on August 6, on TV and on our digital platforms.
