In an interview with CNN, Captain André Elias, spokesperson for the São Paulo Fire Department, stated that the possibility of finding survivors after a landslide in the municipality of Franco da Rocha is “quite small”.
According to him, the chances of resisting a collapse of structures are greater than in landslides.
In the state of São Paulo, the rains left at least 24 dead in eight municipalities.
According to Captain Elias, 63 men are working on the Franco da Rocha landslide and the search is expected to continue throughout the night.
In the event of new rains or the possibility of new landslides, the work must be temporarily interrupted.
“The weather condition at this exact moment, the meteorology, is not an ally for the Fire Department, it offers new risks. The rains drench the land even more. It is possible to verify new small landslides. So it is a factor that delays the work and puts the entire safety of the operation at risk”, he concluded.
Weather forecast
Also this Monday, ClimaTempo meteorologist, Josélia Pegorim, explained to CNN what caused the storms. “This situation that we have now, which started on Thursday [27], was the organization of an episode of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone. This is a typical summer system in Brazil“, he said.
According to the meteorologist, this was the same cause of the heavy rains that hit Bahia and Minas Gerais recently.
For the next few days, Pegorim said that the rains will begin to gradually weaken, with longer periods of sunshine.
“There is still more rain forecast for the next few days, but it is no longer that constant rain, as we saw over the weekend and still see today. Starting tomorrow, the periods with sun are already starting to increase.”
