Chance of long-term conflict prompts greater Western support, says expert

Although Russia has been de-escalating the conflict in the Ukrainian capital region, fighting continues in the east of the country. This Friday (8), an attack on a train station used to evacuate civilians left at least 50 dead.

In an interview with CNNProfessor of International Relations at the University of São Paulo (USP), Felipe Loureiro, stated that it is noticeable “the European Union, NATO, the United States significantly expanding their military aid to Ukraine, imagining that we are going to have a conflict unfortunately bloody and apparently long over there in the east of the country”.

Russia denies responsibility for the attack on the station. While Ukraine blames Russian forces, the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) claims that the wreckage found near the site is from the Tochka-U rocket, used only by Ukrainians.

Faced with this scenario, more than a month after the beginning of the war, Loureiro assesses that “Russian military operations in the region indicate the possibility of a long conflict between Ukrainian troops and Russian troops there in Donbass”.

Yesterday a meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations voted to suspend Vladimir Putin’s country from the Human Rights Council. Today, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, attended a meeting directly from the Ukrainian capital.

“It’s very significant that you have a high-level figure from the European Union, like Ursula von der Leyen going to Kiev,” explained the professor.
