Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said the government did not participate in the “plot” for the escape earlier this month of Venezuelan opponents who were asylums at the Argentine embassy protected by Brazil in Caracas.
“We did not participate in the escape, the mechanism, from the plot to the escape and we do not know [como saíram]. We expect one day to receive this information, ”said the Chancellor, at the Senate Foreign Relations Commission, on Tuesday (20).
Vieira also said he thought that the regime of Nicolás Maduro does not know how opponents, who were for more than a year in the Argentine embassy, protected by Brazil, managed to leave the place.
The escape of the four asylums, members of the team of opposing leader María Corina Machado, on which he had arrest warrants, was publicly revealed by the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 6.
“The United States greet the successful rescue of all the hostages of the Maduro regime at the Argentine embassy in Caracas. After a precise operation, all hostages are now on American soil,” the secretary wrote on social network X.
There are no further details of how opponents have been able to leave the diplomatic thirst and the Venezuelan territory. Vieira said she had the information that the asylums are in the US, but not receiving further clarification on how they left the embassy and managed to arrive in Donald Trump’s country.
The Brazilian chancellor revealed that the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was notified of the exit of the asylums by the opposing leader himself.
“We learned that the Venezuelans were leaving the Argentine embassy through María Corina Machado who warned us, because she had constant contact with us,” Vieira said, “She warned us at night that they were leaving.”
According to the chancellor, Machado contacted again “thanking Brazil immensely, President Lula, and the Brazilian government for all management, for all care, for all the time invested.”
Brazil took the custody of the Argentine embassy in Venezuela in August last year, after Maduro break relations with the Javier Milei government and expel the Argentine diplomatic corps of Caracas.
By assuming the representation of Argentine interests in Venezuela, Itamaraty began to deal with the Maduro regime about the situation of the asylum opponents.
During the asylum period of the embassy, the members of the ax team have reported several times cuts of light, restrictions on the entry of food, water and medicine, as well as police sighs to diplomatic headquarters.
“This mission represented a great effort from the Brazilian Embassy in Caracas, which was sending an employee daily to see how the situation was. Our involvement was total,” Vieira told the senators.
Brazil also claims to have insisted on the safe conduct so that Venezuelans could leave the place and leave the country since Maduro break relations with Milei. The requests, however, were never fulfilled by Chavismo.
“I had several times requested by the safe conduct and said that if they gave, we would immediately send a FAB or private plane to get them safe and never had the consent,” said the chancellor.
