THE Chanchada Bar fell in the favor of the carioca. Mainly, the high-spirited and funky crowd that frequents Rua General Polidoro, a hipster part of the city, in Botafogo.
Opened by members of Pope It’s from Bar Room, in partnership with the owners of Our , another three houses that are worth the view, the Chanchada is all decorated with LP covers, including the statue of São Jorge and tube television. It has a tiny salon inside, which houses just a seven-seat counter. And, of course, the hotly contested tables are all on the sidewalk, to the delight of cariocas.
But the address doesn’t just live on hype. Bar food is simple but full of flavor. Don’t miss the shredded beef cheek dumpling (R$8 each) and the portions of grilled okra (R$20), duck heart (R$32), beef tongue appetizer with wood sauce with pickled jiló ( 32 reais) and the spectacular pork belly crackling (28 reais), meaty and certainly one of the best in the South Zone.
Another temptation is a dish in honor of the sambista Gabriel da Muda. It brings shredded roast beef (R$ 46) covered in dry curd and served with roasted onions and a bread basket to dip in the tasty sauce.
The house publishes its PFs of the week on its Instagram account, including steak à roll with rice and beans, tutu à mineira; oxtail rice with watercress and the peculiar gizzard stroganoff.
In the alcoholic section, in addition to the creamy-collar draft beer, there are great blends of tamarind, ginger, burnt coconut and banoffee.
Warning: arrive early Thursday through Saturday nights to try to secure a table.
