Actresses Cleo Pires, Giovanna Ewbank and Erika Janusa spoke to CNN who consider it important that productions like “The Magic of Aruna”, a national Disney series, change people’s negative ideas about witches. The interview took place backstage at CCXP23 this Thursday (30).
“Redefining the place of the witch is important because women are a very important part of society”, began Cleo.
“Witches were women who had powers. And everything that is powerful scares. They were women who had knowledge about herbs, about nature, about healing. And that scared people. Women were persecuted. It’s a recurring theme like ‘evil witches’, but, in fact, they were wise women”, added Janusa.
Together, the three actresses star in the new Disney series that talks about three good witches. However, the narrative is not limited to talking about magic and a fantastic universe, but also explores social issues that have been present in real-world debates.
“’The Magic of Aruna’ is a series that talks about three witches and witchcraft, but we delve into several very important themes, such as the climate issue, feminism, bullying, representation, social difference. There are many important things”, says Gio Ewbank.
Asked about becoming a Disney character, Gio spoke about the effect she noticed on her children: “They never imagined that mom could be a Disney character, and even more so a witch, with powers, with magic” .

Before being released on streaming, the production went through a period of seven months of post-production, to insert special effects that suggest the characters’ magic, said Janusa.
“I was very curious to watch it and I was very surprised. I was very curious about these effects, because we did the magic without really understanding what it would look like. And watching it exceeded my expectations. It didn’t lose anything to productions made outside the country”, said the actress.
“I hope there will be more in this profile and that there will even be a second season”, he concluded.
