They started today at noon gatherings of citizens in front of the town halls of the cities of France, which were organized after the attack that targeted the residence of a mayor in the Paris region, AFP journalists found, especially in Nanterre, where the death of 17-year-old Nael by police gunfire sparked riots across the country.

“Since Tuesday, the nights have been difficult for the residents (…) The violence committed is unacceptable,” said the mayor of Nantes, Patrick Zary, addressing around 100 gathered residents and employees of the town hall. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanen announced today that approx 3,200 people were arrested by French law enforcement from Tuesday until yesterday, Sunday, in five consecutive nights of riots sparked by the death of 17-year-old Nael. “60%” of these 3,200 people “they had no judicial precedent, they are not known to the police services” and “they had never been the subject of an audit,” the minister said during a visit to Rennes, in northeastern France.

Darmanen insisted “in the responsibility of the parents, the family” in the supervision of these young people, “because it is not up to the national police or the gendarmerie or the mayor or even the State to sort out the problem when a 12-year-old sets fire to a school». The minister says that after last night in which there was no major incident, he finds that “order is restored”, “thanks to the determination shown.”

The minister also announced that they were released 20 million euros to restore “by the end of the summer” the “video security cameras” that were broken during the riots. “State money is at the disposal of the mayors of France,” he stressed.
