At least two explosions were reported Thursday in its capital Lebanon, Beirut, after violent incidents that took place in a place where there was going to be a protest about the explosion in the city port in 2020, as reported by Sputnik.
According to Reuters, fire killed at least one person in Beirut, where people gathered to protest against Judge Tarek Bitar, who is investigating the explosion at the port.
A military source told Reuters that five more people had been injured in the fire.
A medical source said one person was killed by a bullet to the head and eight were injured during an exchange of fire during a demonstration by Shiite Hezbollah and Amal movements demanding the removal of Judge Tarek Bitar.
Three of the eight injured are in critical condition, according to Dr. Mariam Hassan of Sahel Hospital.
The agency notes that at least two explosions were heard as strong Lebanese army forces arrived in the area.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun is in contact with Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the interior and defense ministers to monitor the situation.
The political tension over the 2020 catastrophic explosion investigation is growing, with the judge handling the case being charged with bias. That blast had killed more than 200 people and wreaked havoc in Beirut.
