Panic prevails in Venezuela due to severe weather conditions. Houses and shops were destroyed, trees were uprooted, roads turned into rivers and at least 25 people died and 52 others are missing after the landslides that hit the industrial city of Las Tejerias, in central-northern Venezuela, last Saturday (8/10) night .
The bad weather which has been affecting the Latin American country for weeks had already claimed the lives of 13 people.
“Unfortunately, 25 people were found dead. We are continuing the investigations,” the Minister of Interior and Justice, Remigios Sebagios, said on public television, giving an updated casualty count. Earlier, Vice President Delsy Rodriguez spoke of 22 dead.
Disaster struck Las Tejerias after three hours of heavy rain on Saturday afternoon. Rivers and tributaries overflowed and landslides of mud, rocks, trees and debris came down the mountainside and rushed the town of about 50,000 people.
Carmen, worried, waits for news from Margot Silva, her missing relative. She lives in a neighboring town, she had gone to Las Tejerias to do some shopping.
“It’s the first time we’ve seen something like this, we don’t know how we’ll be able to recover”, however “we will mourn lives”, he said.
On social networking sites, many offered to help. Los Leones, a baseball team from Caracas, announced that it has already started collecting non-perishable food, water and clothing for those affected.
In 1999, massive landslides killed some 10,000 people in Vargas state, 25 kilometers north of Caracas.
