The protesters are protesting the government’s announcement last week that it was suspending the country’s EU membership talks. Critics see this as confirming a Russian-influenced shift away from pro-Western policies, which the ruling party denies. The Coalition for Change, the largest opposition party, said in a post on X that Zurab Japarindze, one of its leaders, was arrested by police while leaving the demonstration.
