The former swimmer had been stranded in South Africa since last March. Having left for a series of commitments related to her humanitarian and animal welfare causes, she had been ill almost immediately, but the reasons for her absence from the Principality were only disclosed in July. At the beginning Palazzo Grimaldi had preferred not to provide details or explanations, but when the emptiness became more and more evident, the first official announcements arrived. The princess explained that she had undergone an operation for the maxillary sinus lift, a bone graft that is carried out in order to make implants in the molar area. After the operation, an infection involving the ears ensued, hence the inability to move: his hearing system could not withstand pressure greater than 20,000 feet.
