Charles III the sentimental: he will restore Palazzo Tatoi, a tribute to his father Filippo

His passion for design is known, he helped restore and make many properties of the British royal family usable, now king Charles III goes further and focuses on Greece: His next goal is to give a new chance at life to Tatoi Palacelong owned by the Greek royal family and inextricably linked to the figure of the father Philipborn Prince of Greece.

The history of this residence could not be more fascinating. Built just outside Athens by George I, the second king of Greece, in 1870, the Palace was inspired by the Gothic cottage of Peterhof, in St. Petersburg; a tribute to Queen Olga, wife of the sovereign.

Destroyed during the Second World War and abandoned after the proclamation of the Republic in 1973, Palazzo Tatoi fell into disrepair, despite still hosting the remains of Charles’s paternal grandfather, Prince Andrew of Greece, died in 1944, and also gave birth to Sophia of Spain (Prince Philip was a cousin of Paul I, father of the former Spanish queen, ed).

King Charles III, for whom roots have always been a serious matter, has decided to intervene personally, reaching an agreement with the Greek Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis, over a cup of tea at Windsor Castle. The two met last November 28 and everything went as hoped.

The restoration plan is ambitious, about 14 million euros to save Palazzo Tatoi from its deterioration. Once the works are completed, it will be a museumwhich should also include a farm and a shop, to sell local products at zero kilometre.

Carlo’s support will come to Greece through a pool of experts who report to his Prince’s Foundation. The Greek authorities will take as a model the restoration of Dumfries House, a country house in Ayrshire, brought back to life thanks to the intervention of the sovereign, when he was still prince of Wales. It is not yet clear, however, if Windsor house will also help financially to what is shaping up to be a small business. After all, the nobles never talk about money. It’s too bourgeois…
