Charles III’s public face will be known over time, says professor

With the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the proclamation as the new monarch of the United Kingdom, public attention surrounding King Charles III became even more significant.

The sovereign, who takes part in his mother’s funeral ceremonies, got angry on Tuesday (13) with a pen while signing documents. “I hate it,” said Charles. The monarch was in Northern Ireland, accompanied by his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, when, when signing some papers, he expressed impatience after the pen got ink on his hand.

In an interview with CNN this Wednesday (14), the specialist and professor of English literature Marcela Santos, from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj), stated that the public personality of the new British monarch will be known over time and that, at this moment, , exacerbated reactions can be common due to the crisis period for the royal family.

“He needs to be more aware of the fact that although he’s been watched his whole life, he’s very different now. People have expectations of him. I think there’s a lot of context too. It will take some time for us to come to a conclusion about what Charles’ tone will be because he is still in a moment of crisis, turning nights”, explains Marcela.

“Part of this annoyance and irritation that is not well received by most people, as you can see in the comments on social media. On the other hand, there are people talking about this, that there is a lot of wear and tear of the moment, that after all, he is a man of a certain age who has just lost his mother. But without a doubt, from a public relations point of view this is not cool, he needs to be more careful, but it will take a while for us to really feel the tone of what Charles’ public face will look like “, he adds.

Challenges

The expert says that one of the challenges of Charles III’s new role is to show the UK as a whole the relevance of the monarchy in the face of a new sovereign.

“A big challenge is to keep showing the public not just in England, but in Scotland and Northern Ireland, which have their own issues beyond those of the UK as a whole, why the monarchy under Charles continues to be relevant. So it seems to me that he is going to bet a lot on that sense of continuity, using both the image of Queen Elizabeth and the promise of the future as people much dearer,” he says.
