The “thank you” of the EU to Turkey delivered today, Friday (12/11) by the President of the Council Charles Michel, because – as he said – he agreed to prevent the citizens of Iraq, Syria and Yemen, who plan to travel to Belarus, to buy tickets or to board planes for Minsk at Turkish airports.
“I thank the Turkish authorities,” Michel wrote on Twitter.
The Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schoinas also welcomed the move by Turkey, as broadcast by APE-MPE. Mr Schoinas, who is visiting Beirut as the second stop on a tour of countries to push for an end to the flow of migrants to Minsk, said flights from Turkey would be reduced from 17 to zero after the decision.
The Turkish Civil Aviation Authority says a decision has been made to resolve “the problem of illegal border crossings between the European Union and Belarus”. According to the same source, the decision to ban the issuance of tickets and boarding flights is valid “until further notice”.
The EU has been in talks with international carriers, such as Turkish Airlines, to ask them to stop issuing non-refundable tickets to Minsk, from where the EU complains that migrants are being transported to the Polish border as a means of exerting pressure on the EU.
