The president of the European Council, Charles Michel, sent a clear message in favor of removing Russia from the UN Security Council due to the war in Ukraine.
“When a permanent member state of the Security Council launches an unprovoked and unjustified war, a war condemned by the General Assembly, the suspension of the membership of the SA should be automatic, in my opinion,” he said.
“The use of the right of veto should be an exception, but it has become, we have seen, the rule. Reform is needed, it is urgent,” added Charles Michel, addressing the General Assembly in New York.
The five permanent member states of the Security Council (USA, France, Britain, Russia and China) have the right to veto the decisions of the top UN body.
The decisions of the Security Council are legally binding. Under the UN Charter, it has “primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly demanded that Russia be kicked out of the Security Council and stripped of its veto power because of the war since February.
