Charles must keep his mother’s tradition, says former Brazilian ambassador to London

Former Brazilian ambassador to London Rubens Barbosa said, in an interview with CNN that King Charles III must maintain the same tradition as his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died this Thursday (8).

“Charles must continue to be a symbol of national unity, continue to have a deep national presence,” he said. “It will continue on this path of great acceptance – until now at least – and continuity of the monarchy”, added Barbosa.

The former ambassador highlighted the decline in prestige of the monarchy after the death of Princess Diana, but said that there had been a recovery and that the monarchy now has the “prestige of the population”.

As already highlighted by CNN , after the death of the princess, a portion of the British population was outraged by the silence of the queen. The English newspaper “The Express” registered in the headline of its copy, in the edition the day after the event, the phrase “show us you care” (show us that you care, in the literal translation).

“Due to political interference by Prime Minister Tony Blair, she went back and paid homage to Diana, allowed the burial with royal honors,” said Barbosa.

“Today, the monarchy has prestige there, it still has prestige. And the monarchy is linked, through the media and communications, with the population,” she added.

Barbosa also recalled the visit that former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso made to London when he was Chief Executive, in 1997. “She was at our residence for a dinner that the president offered,” he said. “Always very friendly, very interested in Brazil”, concluded the former ambassador.
