Chavism says Brazil should go to Venezuela to “learn” how to hold elections

Chavista leader Diosdado Cabello said this Monday (10) that Brazil and Colombia “lost” by not observing the Venezuelan presidential election and should accept the invitation to observe the country’s elections to “learn” how to hold elections.

“They lose. They should come to Venezuela to see how an election is held, to learn how to run an election. It’s not easy to learn how to hold elections,” said he, who is the vice-president of the Chavista United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

Cabello’s statement was in response to a question about the decision of the Superior Electoral Court of Brazil and Colombia not to accept the invitation to send observers to the Venezuelan electoral process.

“They should come to learn from the best CNE [Conselho Nacional Eleitoral] in the world and with the best people in the world holding elections. Anyone who wants is invited, as long as they respect the rules of the electoral body,” he said.

Opposition leaders also ask the Brazilian TSE and Colombia to reconsider the decision not to observe the electoral process in Venezuela.

According to opposition leader María Corina Machado, both countries have a huge opportunity and responsibility, as they will be impacted if the outcome of the electoral process results in political instability or migration of Venezuelans.

When invited, the TSE informed that it will not monitor the elections in the country. Colombia, through its foreign ministry, said that there was no time to prepare a mission with the necessary conditions to observe the elections in the neighboring country.

Two weeks ago, the Venezuelan CNE withdrew its invitation for the European Union to send observers to the presidential elections, due to the bloc’s sanctions policy against the country and Chavista officials.

The decision has been questioned by the opposition, as the invitation to the EU is one of the points of the Barbados Agreement, signed with the government so that there are political guarantees for the elections.
