Cheaper mobile data – Switch to unlimited packages

The use of data from the mobile phone is subsidized by the telecommunication groups through special offers that significantly reduce the cost per Gigabyte (GB) without affecting the basic subscription programs.

All three mobile providers (Cosmote, Vodafone, Wind) offer subscribers and cardholders with additional data packages, usually with a time limit (eg 10 GB for 7 days with 5 euros), while at regular intervals and especially during the holidays or the holiday season, they also give unlimited data packages.

These packages cover the increased demand recorded in recent years for mobile data usage but also increase the revenues of telecommunications providers from services, even if the average revenue per GB decreases.

The practice of special offers of unlimited data has been started for years, but as the demand increases, these offers that took place 1-2 times a year, usually in August and Christmas, are becoming more and more frequent.

The main beneficiaries of this practice are of course those who consume a lot of data from the mobile as the cost per GB of special offers is much lower than the basic packages of contracts or prepaid.

This can be seen from the data of the National Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) for the first half of 2021, according to which the average revenue of telecommunications providers per Gigabyte fell to 1.18 euros from 1.41 euros in 2020 and from 2.26 euros in 2019. And this when the data traffic in the first half of 2021 was increased compared to the corresponding half of 2020, continuing the upward trend of recent years.

According to a recent survey by Tefficient for the use of mobile data in 46 countries, our country in the first half of 2021, showed a 34% increase in data usage compared to the corresponding half of 2020.

Greece is for another year in the group of countries with the largest percentage increase in data usage, although the average data consumption from mobile remains very low compared to other mature markets, with traffic, on a monthly basis, reaching 3 , 1 Gb per SIM card.

The future in unlimited packages

Most telecommunications providers in mature markets have stopped charging for voice and SMS services depending on usage and usually offer unlimited call minutes and messages at a fixed monthly cost.

This means that the last factor that determines the cost for most mobile users is the data. Although more and more providers are offering unlimited data, this is usually done in the most expensive subscription packages. However, with the expansion of 5G networks, this practice is expected to expand.
