What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a disease characterized by endometrial cell growth — which line the uterus — outside the uterine cavity, reaching regions such as fallopian tubes, ovaries, bladders and, in some cases, the intestine. It can cause symptoms such as intense menstrual cramps, irregular menstruation and, in some patients, infertility.

Yellow March

Yellow March is the awareness campaign about endometriosis in Brazil and aims to alert society about the signs, symptoms, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. It takes place in parallel with the March Lilac campaign, focused on raising awareness about cervical cancer.

Does endometriosis cause bleeding?

Among the main symptoms of endometriosis is increased menstrual flow during menstruation in addition to bleeding when evacuating and urinating, according to the Ministry of Health. In addition, other symptoms may be related, such as intense pain in the pelvic region, especially during menstruation, pain during sexual intercourse, changes in the intestine and difficulty getting pregnant .

Endometriosis and pregnancy

A Difficulty getting pregnant can be one of the symptoms of endometriosis . According to Paulo Cossi, gynecologist and obstetrician with a master's degree in Health Sciences from the Escola Paulista de Medicina, “the inflammation of endometriosis causes adhesion of organs, such as the tubes and ovaries, making it difficult to capture the egg and transport the embryo into the uterus” .

Furthermore, the disease can make the uterus a “toxic” environment for the egg, sperm and embryo. However, not all women with endometriosis will experience infertility. According to the Ministry of Health, around 40% of women with endometriosis present the symptom.

Infertility can be reversed by treating the disease. “Without a doubt, clinical treatments with medication, diet and, mainly, changes in lifestyle, have a positive impact on improving fertility”, says Cossi.

Symptoms of deep endometriosis

A deep endometriosis It is characterized by the presence of lesions (fragments of endometrial tissue) in regions beyond the uterus, such as the bladder, rectum and final portion of the intestine. In this case, symptoms may include:

  • Intense cramps during the menstrual period (the pain can be disabling);
  • Profuse vaginal bleeding during menstruation;
  • Pain during or after sexual intercourse;
  • Difficulty urinating;
  • Presence of blood in the urine;
  • Pain in the lower back or lower abdomen during menstruation.

National Endometriosis Day

O National Day to Fight Endometriosis is celebrated in March 13th , with the aim of raising awareness about the disease and its complications. In 2022, a law was passed that established the date to reinforce the importance of disseminating information about the disease and treatment.

Is endometriosis curable?

A endometriosis has no cure but it can be treated in a multidisciplinary way, as explained by gynecologist André Vinícius.

“Treating this pathology requires a team involving several professionals, such as a nutritionist to evaluate prescribing an anti-inflammatory diet; a pelvic physiotherapist, as there are women who experience pain during sexual intercourse; psychologists to help women live and live with the disease; endocrinologist to monitor hormone levels”, he explains, in an article previously published on CNN.

According to the professional, if the patient does not improve and/or shows progress in the disease despite being monitored by the medical team, surgery is indicated. Other cases in which surgery may be an option are when there are pockets of endometriosis in organs outside the pelvic region, such as the bladder and intestine, explains the specialist.
