The Israeli information security company Check Point has found numerous fraudulent proposals for a COVID-19 vaccine for bitcoins on the darknet.
Several countries have already presented their coronavirus vaccines, and many people do not want to wait for the official vaccination to begin. Scammers are trying to make money on their desires – according to Check Point analysts, a search on the darknet brings up several hundred offers to sell the vaccine for bitcoins. At the same time, back in December, the number of such ads did not exceed 80.
“Unfortunately, while most of us expect the vaccine with hope, some indulge our greed. They are trying to capitalize on people’s concerns about Covid-19 and their desire to protect themselves from the threat of a virus infection, ”write the computer security experts.
According to analysts, if earlier the vaccine was offered for $ 250, now they are asking for $ 500 or even $ 1,000 for a dose of a drug from an unknown manufacturer. At the same time, Check Point experts conducted an experiment and ordered a “made in China” dose of vaccine from one of the sellers for $ 750. However, after transferring bitcoins, he deleted his account.
“All this is due to the growing demand. People don’t want to wait weeks and months for vaccinations, ”the researchers concluded.
German police recently arrested the alleged operator DarkMarket, one of the largest darknet markets.
