Chernobyl, “The fires are increasing radioactive pollution”

In the areas next to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, they are over 10 thousand hectares of forest went up in flames. “They have been registered 31 fires which caused a increased levels of radioactive pollution of the air »: the alarm was raised by the commissioner for human rights of the Ukrainian Parliament, Lyudmila Denisova. It is impossible to put out the fires, because the area is under the control of Russian forces.

“As a result of the combustion, the radionuclides are released into the atmosphere, and they come carried by the wind over long distances. This poses a radiation risk in Ukraine, Belarus and European countries. Due to the windy and dry climate, the intensity and extent of the fires will increase, which can lead to large-scale fires, which are difficult to deal with even in peacetime ».

These flames «can reach the storage facilities of spent nuclear fuel and nuclear waste storage facilities located in the Chernobyl area ”. Denisova does then appeal to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to send fire-fighting experts and equipment to Ukraine as soon as possible, “to avoid irreparable consequences not only for Ukraine but also for the whole world”. And again: «The catastrophic consequences can be prevented only with the immediate evacuation of the territory by Russian troops. Therefore, I urge international human rights organizations to take all possible measures to increase pressure on the Russian Federation to end the military aggression against Ukraine and liberate high-risk areas ”.

The abandoned land around theChernobyl plant is still considered highly riskyfrom the nuclear disaster of 1986. There are still radioactive components in the plant area and the soil still contains radiation and radioactive particles.

Yet despite the Ukrainian agency that manages the area warned of an increased risk of radiation, according to the Rospotrebnadzor – the Russian Federal Control Service on Consumer Protection and Welfare in Moscow -, the levels of radioactivity in the areas of Russia bordering Ukraine would not have increased. “Given the fires in the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Rospotrebnadzor monitored the radiation levels in the border areas of Russia. Monitoring indicates that radiation levels remain stable in Russia ».
