Chickpeas: Global shortage “on the horizon” – The traditional dish of Sifnos is also at risk

The alarm bell for major shortages in chickpeas worldwide, the growers are striking. Doing so can cause serious consequences for both the countries that rely on the legumes as a basic img of protein as well as in manufactured products.

After the cerealsthe corn and sunflower oil, chickpeas enter the global list of products in short supply. Production and distribution of chickpeas may drop by as much as 20% this year, according to the International Legume Confederation.

On the one hand o war in Ukraine which put a brake on chickpea production resulting in 50,000 tonnes originally destined for Europe disappearing. Russia exports at least 200,000 tons a year, and when the war began last February, the export stopped altogether.

On the other hand, the difficult weather conditions in many import countries have a significant impact.

We also don’t know what weather conditions will occur in their new production. It can happen when they plant chickpeas and suffer disasters. There are many factors that affect the shortage. There are upward trends due to transport as in all products. We used to sell bulk chickpeas for 1.50 euros per kilo and now we sell 1.80-1.90 per kilo, up to 2.10,” said Charalambos Nathanael, a food trader to Ant1’s main news bulletin.

This shortage will bring an increase in the price of chickpeas, as well as in the produced products. As a result, the traditional dish of Sifnos, chickpeas, is also at risk.
