After five years dedicated to literature, during which time he released the novel “Essa Gente” and the volume of short stories “Anos de Lead”, the singer Chico Buarque announced the release of their newest song, “How about a samba?” which will be released this Friday (17) on digital platforms.
The song also gives the name to the tour that he will carry out from September, which will pass through several capitals, such as cities like João Pessoa, Natal and Fortaleza, until arriving in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in early 2023.
The show will feature Mônica Salmaso, the songwriters’ singer, who has already recorded two albums dedicated to Chico’s work, “Noites de Gala” and “Samba na Rua”. Award-winning filmmaker and set designer Daniela Thomas is responsible for creating the scenery and conductor Luiz Cláudio Ramos is in the musical direction.
“How about a samba?” was recorded in the label’s studio Fine Biscuit by the same group that has accompanied Chico Buarque for years, including Luiz Cláudio (guitar), João Rebouças (piano), Jorge Helder (bass) and Jurim Moreira (drums). Thiago Serrinha was invited for percussion and Hamilton de Holanda for mandolin.
According to a statement, Chico now proposes, in June 2022, “to scare away the
ugly/To fix the damage.” “How about a samba?” it was written to be an eternal, popular, but at the same time historical and political samba. Politics in the contemporary sense: lived on the streets, on the beach, in football (“Make a goal with a bicycle/Give a rout”), in love and in art (“Lie in the bed of the beloved/Awaken the poet/Find the rhyme that completes the refrain”).
And, above all, in the incorporation of the most comprehensive causes of people’s lives, such as anti-racism, explicit when samba proposes “Make a son, what about?”: “A son with dark skin / With beauty / Well Brazilian, how about ?/Not with money/But culture/How about a pure beauty”, in verses that quote the song “Pure Beauty”, by Caetano Veloso.

How about a samba?
(Chico Buarque)
a samba
How about a samba?
Pull a samba, how about it?
To scare away the ugly weather
To fix the damage
How about a drink?
A relief, a daydream
A samba to brighten the day
to beat the game
heart on fire
and cool head
A samba with class, calmly
Fall into the sea, wash the soul
Take a bath with thick salt, how about it?
Get out of the well
walk good
See a drumming there at the Valongo pier
Dancing jongo at Pedra do Sal
Enter the Roda da Gamboa
Score a bicycle goal
rout
Lying in the lover’s bed
awaken poet
Find the rhyme that completes the refrain
Make a child, how about?
To see grow, raise a child
In a good place, in a nice city
A child with dark skin
with beauty
Very Brazilian, how about that?
not with money
but the culture
How about a pure beauty
At the end of the storm?
Already after creating shell
And lose tenderness
After a lot of ball out of goal
Again with the spine straight, how about it?
Pick up the pieces, go to fight
Keeping the course and cadence
Conjure ignorance, how about?
Dismantle the brute force
So how about pulling a samba
Pull a cool samba
Pull a cool samba
After so much trick
After so much waterfall
After so much defeat
After so much dementia
And a motherfucking pain, how about it?
pull a samba
How about a samba?
a samba
