Child dies after falling into 8-meter hole in MG; rescue took more than 15 h

An eight-year-old child died after falling into a hole approximately 8 meters deep and 30 cm in diameter in Carmo do Paranaíba, in the Alto Paranaíba region, in Minas Gerais.

The incident took place on Rua Adebrão Gomes Branquinho, in the Alvorada neighborhood. The Fire Department was called around 5 pm on Sunday (21) and completed the rescue at 9:45 am this Monday (22). According to firefighters, Pedro Augusto Ferreira Alves was rescued alive, but with loss of consciousness and in cardiorespiratory arrest. The boy was taken to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA), but he did not survive.

The work, delicate due to the risk of collapse, lasted more than 15 hours. Firefighters carried out a lateral access strategy, with a technical and manual excavation next to the hole.

The site was also reinforced in a preventive manner against possible landslides.

A medical team from the municipality supported the work and provided an ambulance on site. In all, three teams were involved in the incident.
