Child dies after hospitalization for tonsillitis; police investigate negligence

The Regional Council of Medicine of Pernambuco (Cremepe) and the Civil Police are investigating the death of Bruna Brito Barbosa de Araújo, aged 4, who died in December, four days after being treated at a private hospital in Recife.

The child was initially diagnosed with tonsillitis and treated with benzetacil, but his condition worsened and ended up not resisting on December 13th.

Bruna’s family reported the doctors involved in the child’s care, including professionals in the areas of pediatrics, anesthesiology and otorhinolaryngology, to Cremepe, which opened an investigation this week to investigate possible ethical violations.

The Pernambuco Civil Police also opened an investigation to investigate the circumstances of Bruna’s death. In a statement, the police reported that the case is being monitored by the Crimes Against Children and Adolescents Police Department, which requested expert examinations to help investigate the facts. At this time, police have not provided additional details about the investigation.

Complaint

Last Tuesday (14), Bruna’s parents reported the case on social media, in a series of three videos. The girl’s family alleges that, during care in December, there was negligence on the part of health professionals.

According to the parents, Josinaldo de Araújo Júnior and Gabriella de Brito Silva, the child was taken to the hospital on December 9th with symptoms of tonsillitis. The girl had symptoms such as a sore throat, swelling in the neck area and bad breath. Bruna had taken a course of antibiotics shortly before to treat otitis. The doctor who provided care prescribed an application of benzetacil – a fast-acting injectable antibiotic.

At first, the family was opposed to the use of the medication, but was convinced by the doctor that it would be the most appropriate alternative. However, Bruna showed no improvement.

“On Wednesday, that was when the very rude doctor said that benzetacil was not a medicine for headaches, which would go away in 10 minutes”, reports Josinaldo de Araújo Júnior, Bruna’s father.

Fall in the ICU

The girl didn’t get better. On December 12, Bruna underwent a throat CT scan, but the exam was not carried out due to respiratory complications. The child was intubated and taken to the ICU, where, according to the parents, an incident occurred during the transfer.

“When transferring from a stretcher to the ICU stretcher, we hear a noise and the scream of one of the nurses saying: ‘Doctor, what is that, doctor?’ And a huge explosion in the oxygen cylinder. At that moment, the doctor becomes desperate and shouts: ‘Close the door, close the door!’ so that we wouldn’t see what was happening. And then they closed the door. There, we already knew that they had done something that had ended everything. The chance that Bruna had, for the smallest thing, became impossible. Because they knocked Bruna down,” said Gabriella de Brito Silva, the girl’s mother.

The family believes that Bruna was knocked down during the transfer process to the ICU, which resulted in bruises and worsened her condition. The girl died around 6:30 am on December 13. The hospital, in turn, reported that the cause of death was pulmonary hemorrhage.

“The doctor closed the door and there we didn’t know how much time had passed, whether it was an hour, 40 minutes, I don’t know. But before that, a nurse left the room. She had a lot of blood on her clothes. I asked, ‘What happened? Did you knock my daughter down?’ She replied: ‘No, Bruna extubated herself’. ‘Bruna extubated herself? She was sedated.’ (…) The nurse left to call another doctor, a pediatrician, and then they returned to the room. And there they were trying to save Bruna’s life, carrying out rescue maneuvers”, denounced Gabriella.

The report from the Pernambuco Legal Medical Institute (IML) was released on Wednesday (15). According to the document, the cause of the girl’s death was acute respiratory failure, resulting from a respiratory infection, which resulted in pulmonary hemorrhage as a complication.

Cremepe, in a note, lamented Bruna’s death and assured that it is following the guidelines of the Code of Medical Ethics in investigating the case, which has an initial deadline of 90 days and can be extended. In a note, the Council reiterated that its investigation “has an investigative nature, with the objective of investigating the authorship and materiality of a possible violation of the Code of Medical Ethics”.
