Child drowns in irrigation canal in Petrolina (PE); police investigate

The body of an 8-year-old child was found last Tuesday (15) in an irrigation canal in Petrolina (PE), approximately 715 kilometers from Recife. The drowning incident was recorded by the Civil Police of Pernambuco, which is investigating the circumstances of the case.

According to witnesses, the child was walking along the canal bank accompanied by puppies and ended up falling into the water. A worker providing services nearby saw the accident and, with the help of another person, tried to rescue the child. Despite attempts at resuscitation, she did not survive.

The body was sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) in Petrolina. The Civil Police reported that they had opened an investigation to determine the details of what happened.

Residents of the region reported that this is not the first time that similar cases have occurred there, which raises concerns about safety in areas close to the irrigation canals.

In a note sent to CNN the São Francisco and Parnaíba Valleys Development Company (Codevasf) lamented the tragedy and expressed solidarity with the family and the local community and stated that it is investigating the case.

“While monitoring the collection of information about the circumstances of the accident, the Company reinforces the need for the community to observe the warnings and campaigns of the Nilo Coelho Irrigation District (DINC) about precautions that must be taken in relation to the channels ”, he explained.

Wanted by CNN DINC, responsible for administering the irrigation project, has not yet commented on the incident.
