Child hit by stray bullet on New Year’s Eve leaves ICU and continues to recover

The 9-year-old boy, hit by a stray bullet in the early hours of New Year’s Day in the east zone of São Paulo, left the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

According to the Santa Helena Hospital and Maternity, the boy’s health condition is stable, and he will continue treatment in the pediatric ward to continue his recovery.

Matheus was injured while playing on the sidewalk with his father during the New Year’s Eve celebration, on Avenida Tenente Lauro Sodré .

The projectile hit the boy’s neck at around 12:11 am, and security camera footage recorded the moment.

According to his mother, Vanessa Hohne, the boy shows small but significant improvements with physiotherapy at the hospital, although he has not yet regained movement in his right leg.

“His discharge day is approaching, so he can continue with his physical therapy rehabilitation at home,” she wrote in a message.

Vanessa informed that the family is preparing to adapt the house with items such as a wheelchair and bath, in addition to looking for a place for ongoing rehabilitation.

The case was registered as attempted murder in the 69th Police District (Teotônio Vilela). The mother stated that she has not yet received concrete information from the police about the investigation.
