Children vaccinated with Coronavac will be followed up for a year, says doctor

The doctor Valéria Valim, coordinator of a study that will evaluate Coronavac in 1,280 children and adolescents in Espírito Santo, said this Thursday (13), in an interview with CNN, that they will be monitored for a year to verify the production of antibodies and defense cells against the coronavirus.

“This is a study that aims to compare Coronavac with the Pfizer vaccine in children aged 3 to 17 years and we will evaluate both the efficacy and immunogenicity, ability of both vaccines to produce antibodies in defense cells, and also compare the safety of the two immunizers”, explained Valéria about the tests that start this Friday (14).

So far, only the Pfizer immunizer has authorization from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) for use in children and adolescents in the country.

“The children will be monitored for a period of one year. Over the course of this year, we will be evaluating with cellular and pulmonary immunity tests during four different times. It is likely that in four months we will already have the results regarding the main outcomes”, he continued.

Anvisa) intends to release a decision on the use of Coronavac in this age group between Wednesday and Friday (21) of next week, according to information from the policy analyst at CNN Renata Agostini.

More data on the effectiveness of the vaccine is awaited, as it is proven to be safe. A meeting between Anvisa, Instituto Butantan and other experts took place this Thursday to analyze data on the immunizing agent in children and adolescents aged 3 to 17 years. The deadline for providing the final information is until next Tuesday (18).
