Chile: An area 10 times the size of Amsterdam burned – 323 active outbreaks

The authorities declared a night curfew in Chile in the areas most affected by the fires, with the aim of preventing looting and theft. The midnight to 5 a.m. curfew will apply to at least 28 towns in three provinces that have been declared in a state of disaster: Biobio, Niublé and Araucanía.

From the fires, which have been raging for a week, 24 people have lost their lives and approximately 2,196 have been injured, while 3,430,000 acres have been destroyed. At the same time, 1,205 houses have been burned and 5,570 people have been left homeless, according to the most recent official count.

Yesterday, Thursday 9/2, 323 fires were active in the country, while approximately 5,600 firefighters had to extinguish them. Aid has also been sent to the country from abroad, mainly from Mexico, Colombia, Spain, France and Argentina.

According to the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department, the burned area is 10 times the size of Amsterdam.

From February 1st the fires have intensified from moderate to strong winds, temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius and chronic drought.
