Chile: Cinematic robbery of copper worth 4 million euros in the port of San Antonio

A group of armed men today carried out a cinema robbery in the port of San Antonio, in the central Chile. Gunmen stole 13 containers of copper from state-owned Codelco bound for China, raising concerns about the safety of exports to one of the world’s richest countries in copper deposits.

Chilean media reports citing police imgs, state that its estimated value copper that was stolen amounts to approximately 4.4 million dollars (4.09 million euros).

It is the biggest copper theft since a barrage of attacks on trains in the north of the country forced the Chilean government to strengthen safety measures in ore transport. The authorities attributed the copper train robberies to international rings.

The police, according to the Athens News Agency, believe that a gang operating in the area is responsible for the attack at the port of San Antonio. “It could be gang work that’s infesting San Antonio, because we have other crimes with similar characteristics,” local police chief Gonzalo Garcia told Radio Cooperativa.

Explaining that it was a “well designedrobbery, he said the attackers “disabled the security cameras before threatening the workers and guards.” They then loaded the containers onto trucks and disappeared.
