Chile has announced the first human case of bird flu

Its health authorities Chile they spotted it first case of bird flu in humans, announced the Ministry of Health in Santiago. He is a 53-year-old with severe flu. The patient is hospitalized in stable condition, according to the ministry.

The authorities are conducting investigation to ascertain the origin of the infection and trace the patient’s contacts.

Chilean authorities had reported cases of H5N1 in wild birds in early December. Recent outbreaks in poultry farms have forced the government to suspend poultry exports.

Cases have also been recorded in poultry farms in Argentina, however Brazil – the country with the largest poultry exports in the world – has not detected any cases, officially remaining free of the virus.

The health authorities of Chile noted that the virus can be transmitted from birds or marine mammals to humans, but there is no known case of human-to-human transmission in the country. On January 10, Ecuadorian authorities confirmed the first extremely rare case of A-H5 influenza in a 9-year-old girl.

In early March, Cambodian authorities announced that they had ruled out human-to-human transmission of bird flu, following the cases of a man diagnosed with the virus following the death of his daughter, who was also infected.

THE World Health Organization (WHO) indicated earlier this year that he thinks “alarming” the situation regarding bird flu at international level, however, reassures regarding the risk to humans, which he describes as comparatively low. However, pharmaceutical companies are preparing bird flu vaccines to prevent its occurrence in humans, “just in case”.
