Zoo management accuses the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) of forcing wild animals to be drugged to read their microchips.

“SAG required us to immobilize and anesthetize all our animals for their microchips to be read,” said Cesar Chanamba, legal counsel for the Los Angeles Zoo, located about 470 kilometers south of the capital, Santiago. “We explained to them that anesthesia carries the same risks for animals as it does for humans,” he added and asserted: “They forced us to put our hands in blood.”.

In a statement from SAG, it is emphasized that anesthesia is a routine procedure and that the measure is imposed for the safety of both the animals and the staff. “Unfortunately, one of the animals that underwent this procedure died,” the statement added. He condemned the way the zoo management chose for this particular protest, leaving open the possibility of taking legal action against it.

Police quickly cordoned off the area around the presidential palace and removed the lion’s carcass.
