Chilean tourist is arrested after calling an employee a “monkey” in Corcovado

A 30-year-old Chilean tourist was arrested red-handed in Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro, after committing a crime of racial insult. She called an employee of the Trem do Corcovado company a “monkey” during a tourist trip this Tuesday afternoon (17).

According to information from the Rio Government Secretariat, the woman allegedly committed the offense against the employee, who works at the reception and departure of visitors, at the tourist attraction’s arrival station. It was not explained what led the tourist to commit the racist act. The arrest in the act was made by agents from the Segurança Presente program.

She was accompanied by a friend at the time of the incident. The two have been in Rio de Janeiro for around ten days and were scheduled to return to Chile for next Saturday (21). The suspect’s friend does not face any charges.

According to the Rio government, those involved and a witness were taken to the 9th Police Station, in Catete. Subsequently, the incident was transferred to the 12th DP, in Copacabana. “The tourist will remain detained,” the statement said.

Wanted by CNN the company Trem do Corcovado took a stand reinforcing that they repudiate any type of prejudice.

“For 139 years, the Corcovado Train has welcomed more than a million people a year, from all over the world. We transport thousands of people every day. All ethnicities, creeds, genders, languages ​​and ages. In Brazil, racism is a crime and the Law must be applied ruthlessly as a way of curbing this harmful attitude”, states the company.

In a statement, the Civil Police reported that the case was referred to Justice.
