China: 3,000 tons of counterfeit products worth $69 million destroyed

A whopping 3,000 tons of counterfeit brands were destroyed by Chinese authorities such as Nike and Louis Vuitton, in an event held in 17 provinces and cities, state-run CCTV reported.

In total, 3,000 tons of counterfeit products were destroyed, valued at 500 million yuan ($69 million), according to CCTV.

According to a statement from the State Administration for Market Regulation, which did not name specific companies, Yang Xingping, an official in Sichuan, said the government has made cracking down on counterfeit products a priority and is “resolutely correcting illegal and chaotic phenomena with an iron fist”

The “business of destruction” is part of this year’s week of events to promote fair competition policy in China. Such public events are not unusual in the country, where counterfeiting continues to be a large industry despite efforts to stamp it out.
