The death toll from a property collapse in China last week has risen to 53, with more bodies being retrieved, Chinese media reported today.
The eight-storey building, which housed a hotel, apartment and cinema, collapsed on April 29 in the Wangcheng district of Changsha City, the capital of Hunan Province (central), for unknown reasons.
To date, authorities have reported 26 dead.
According to Chinese public television CCTV, the search and rescue operation was “terminated”. A total of 10 people were rescued, the New China News Agency reported.
Hundreds of members of rescue teams have been involved in the operation to locate dozens of missing people in recent days.
Eleven people, including the property owner and members of a team of town planning inspectors, were arrested after the property collapsed, according to Changsha authorities.
Disasters of this kind are common in China, where real estate inspections bring to light in many cases violations of urban planning regulations.
