China: 76 coronavirus cases in 24 hours, highest number since January

Her Ministry of Health Of China announced today that in the past 24 hours 76 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were diagnosed, the highest number since January, with the majority being recorded in a province adjacent to Shanghai, the most populous city in the country, according to APE.

The giant Asian country, the first to face the pandemic of the new coronavirus at the end of 2019, has almost eliminated COVID-19 from its territory since the spring of 2020 and life has practically returned to normal. The 76 cases are more than double the 32 mentioned by the National Committee (the Ministry) of Health the previous day. The 40 were due to transmission in the community, from 5 the previous one.

The Chinese authorities apply a zero-tolerance policy when cases are detected, immediately proceeding with thorough contact tracking, mass tests and quarantine of large urban centers to prevent the spread of the virus. 39 of the local transmission cases were located in Jiangsu Province and one in the northeastern province of Liaoning.

In Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu, a second series of nucleic acid tests is being conducted on its 9.3 million inhabitants, the China Daily reported today. The operation of the metro has been suspended and other restrictive measures have been imposed to prevent its spread. Officially, the death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in China remains unchanged at 4,636 due to COVID-19 out of a total of 92,605 SARS-CoV-2 cases.
