The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China said on Friday that Taiwan’s ruling party is trying to escalate tensions after the self-governing island shot down an unidentified civilian drone this week.
“The Progressive Democratic Party’s attempt to escalate tensions means nothing,” spokesperson Zhao Lijian said in a regular statement, in response to a question about the drone firing.
Taiwan shot down the drone as it flew over a island controlled by the country on the Chinese coast on Thursday (1st).
Taiwan’s Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang said the shooting was the most “appropriate” thing to do after repeated warnings, adding that China should exercise restraint.
Neither Taiwan nor China explicitly said the drone came from China.
