China allows Covid cases with mild symptoms to be quarantined at home

China’s national health authority said on Wednesday (7) that asymptomatic cases of Covid-19 and people with mild symptoms can be quarantined at home, in the strongest sign that the country is preparing its people to live with the disease. illness.

Most cases of coronavirus infection are asymptomatic or mild, requiring no special treatment, the National Health Commission said in a statement.

“Asymptomatic people and mild cases can be isolated at home while strengthening health monitoring, and can be transferred to designated hospitals for treatment in a timely manner if the condition worsens,” the NHC said.

For nearly three years, China has managed Covid-19 as a dangerous disease on par with bubonic plague and cholera, but since last week, top officials have acknowledged the virus’s reduced ability to cause disease, while some Chinese experts have suggested which is no more deadly than the seasonal flu.

The change in quarantine protocols reflects adjustments in prevention and control measures according to the characteristics of virus mutations, the NHC said.

Home isolation of those infected marks a significant change in the rules.

Earlier in the year, entire communities were on lockdown, sometimes for weeks, after just one positive case was found.

Last month, new, less stringent quarantine rules only required blocking the affected buildings.

High-risk areas must be precisely defined by building, unit, floor and residence, and must not be arbitrarily expanded to housing developments and entire communities, the NHC said.

The health authority urged localities to “resolutely rectify simplified, one-size-fits-all and additional measures” for Covid prevention and reject and overcome “formalism and bureaucracy”.

The NHC listed a total of 10 new guidelines, which followed 20 measures released on November 11 with the aim of “optimizing” disease prevention and control protocols.

The most recent version of the protocols – published at the end of June – were based on preventing the importation of infections from abroad and containing domestic repercussions, while “on the fly” reducing cases to zero when they emerged.

While the NHC did not mention the zero-tolerance approach to Covid on Wednesday, it did say that the latest edition of epidemic control protocols must be followed while implementing the latest measures and guidelines.
