China and US narratives on global issues

In this episode, Roberto Nonato and Américo Martins analyze the recent escalation of tension between China and the United States.

Ties between the world’s two largest economies have deteriorated over issues ranging from Taiwan, which the Chinese government claims as part of its territory, to military activities in the South China Sea.

For the professor of International Relations at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Bruno Hendler, the world increasingly tends to gravitate between China and the United States, which could lead to a replacement of the G7 – in addition to the USA, formed by Germany, Canada, France , Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom – for a G2.

Hendler, who holds a PhD in International Political Economy from UFRJ, stated that this US-China relationship is more complex than a possible second “Cold War”, due to the great economic interdependence between countries.
