China Announces Raw Material Industry Development Plan as part of 14th Five-Year Plan

The Chinese authorities announced yesterday a plan for the development of the raw materials industry, during the period of the 14th Five-Year Program (2021-2025).

From 2025, a new development framework will be organized for the Chinese raw materials sector with emphasis on better quality, improved profitability and distribution, low carbon footprint, but also better safety, according to the forecasts of the mentioned development plan .

The plan was drafted jointly by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and two other government agencies.

The mentioned field will develop into a high priority field for the research, development, production, but also the applications of the most important raw materials worldwide. The industrial system will be safe, independent, but also controlled, as provided for in the development plan.

The raw materials sector includes steel, non-ferrous metals, construction materials, but also sub-sectors of new materials, constituting one of the foundations of the real economy.

Official figures show that industrial production in China’s raw materials sector accounted for 27.4% of total industrial production by 2020.

The same development plan emphasizes the implementation of a digital and green shift in the field of raw materials. Industrial production for unpackaged products, such as crude steel and cement, will not increase, with the corresponding rates of industrial production being kept at reasonable levels.
