At least 16 people were killed and many more were trapped in the rubble when a canteen exploded at noon in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing.
The blast occurred shortly after noon, local time, and was most likely due to a gas leak.
The official New China news agency reported that 16 people were killed and 10 others were injured. One of the injured is being treated in critical condition.
Many workers were eating their lunch when the building collapsed, trapping 27 of them in the rubble. All those trapped have now been retrieved.
The building was located in Wooling District, 100 km east of Chongqing.
A video broadcast by the Chinese media shows a cloud of dust over the wreckage and people trying to get the trapped people out. In other images, firefighters examine the remaining walls and cranes lift the concrete slabs.
In another video also aired by Xinhua, rescuers in military uniforms run to the scene with shovels in their hands.
What happened was “scary” a woman said, explaining that the explosion “broke all the windows” of her house.
A similar explosion in October 2021 at a restaurant in the city of Shenyang killed four people and injured about 50.
