At least 21 people died from the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the Chinese province of Sichuan today and was the strongest recorded in the region since 2017, as it rocked the provincial capital Chengdu and more outlying provinces.
Roads and homes near the epicenter were damaged by landslides and communications were cut in at least one area, state television reported.
No damage has been reported to dams and hydroelectric plants within 50 kilometers of the epicenter, although damage to the provincial power grid has affected power to about 40,000 consumers.
The epicenter of the tremor was in the city of Luding, according to the China Seismological Center, in the mountainous region about 226 km southwest of Chengdu, a city of about 21 million people.
Earthquakes are common in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, especially in the mountainous region to the west.
