China: ‘Burning’ from the heat – Appeal to millions of citizens to stay in their homes

Many cities in China are in red alert today because of it heatwave affecting the country, in which tens of millions of residents have been asked to remain in their homes.

Waves extreme heat, sometimes deadly, they have struck various parts of the globe in recent months, including western Europe this month and India in March-April.

According to the scientists, climate change has made heat waves more frequent, a phenomenon that is expected to worsen with the predicted rise in temperatures in the coming years.

China is no exception: Shanghai recently broke a 149-year-old heat wave record, recording 40.9 degrees Celsiuswhile in the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian, in the eastern part of the country, the mercury over the weekend exceeded 41 degrees Celsiusregistering a historical record in two cities of these provinces.

The population in the red alert zones – mainly in the south-east and north-west of the country – have been instructed to “stop all activity outdoors” and “pay special attention to fire prevention,” the national weather service announced.

Saturday marked the start of the hottest time of the year according to the traditional Chinese calendar, but this summer looks set to surpass all expectations.

As APE-MPE reports, hundreds of Chinese flocked yesterday, Sunday, to the beach of Xiamen, in the province of Fujian, to cool off.

Heat wave puts pressure on China’s power system, as residents and businesses use more air conditioning. The country’s largest power plants broke production records in mid-July, according to Sxcoal, a special energy publication.

Local authorities in some provinces have decided turn off public lighting and charge more for electricity for business during peak hours.

The heat wave will “adversely affect local crops,” warned Fu Jiaolan, an official in charge of forecasting at the National Meteorological Center.
