The Chinese government on Monday issued draft regulations aimed at strengthening tourism along its border and facilitating the entry of some foreigners into China.
According to a draft policy released by China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, groups organized by travel agencies in China’s border areas will be able to choose their port of entry and exit “flexibly” – however, more details on locations and dates were not provided.
China has closed its borders to foreign tourists since the Covid-19 pandemic began in 2020, allowing only certain groups of foreigners to enter, such as those with valid visas.
In recent weeks, the Chinese government has significantly tightened Covid restrictions to contain the spread of the highly transmissible Omicron variant. In September, several megacities were placed on full or partial lockdowns.
Under the new draft policy, foreign tourists will be able to visit China’s border tourist sites – but only as part of tour groups.
The policy did not specify whether those entering still need to follow China’s quarantine requirements for arriving travelers, which consist of a week of hotel quarantine and three days of home observation. China borders 14 countries, including Russia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar.
