China continues its fight against Covid as the virus embargo hits the economy

Beijing to close gyms and movie theaters during Labor Day holidays .

China’s economic activity shrank sharply in April as a series of padlocks to curb the rapidly spreading virus shut down factories and blocked supply chains, according to data released yesterday. This followed last week ‘s sweeping commitments by the country’ s top leaders to boost economic growth.

China is battling the worst epidemic since it first appeared in Wuhan in late 2019, with the padlock imposed on Shanghai residents being one of the longest-lived and most punitive. The crisis in that city has pushed other areas to impose tougher measures even with the slightest sign of a resurgence of the virus to avoid the social and economic upheaval suffered by the financial hub.

Beijing reported 59 new cases on Saturday, up from 54 the previous day, and opened a 1,200-bed emergency hospital in Xiaotangshan. The Universal Studios theme park in the capital also announced that it will be temporarily closed from Sunday to comply with epidemic prevention measures.
