China today accused the United States of “leaving a frightening mess” with its withdrawal, as the Taliban takeover sparked panic at Kabul airport, according to the APE. “This is the clear truth,” said Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, who criticized the toll of two decades of US intervention.
“In Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan, “What we saw was a U.S. military leaving, as it leaves, problems, division, families devastated and decimated,” the Chinese official said during a regular news conference. “They left a terrible mess, they left these areas in a catastrophic state. “The power and role of the United States is to destroy, not to build,” said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, referring to US President Joe Biden.
China shares a 76-kilometer border with Afghanistan. Instability in its neighboring country poses a threat to security in the Xinjiang (northeast) border region. The area has long been the target of attacks on Uighur Muslim separatists or Islamists, and Beijing has imposed draconian security measures there for some years.
Chinese authorities fear, among other things, that Uyghur fighters are finding refuge in neighboring Afghanistan, especially under the Taliban regime. A Taliban delegation met in late July in China with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, to whom he promised that Afghan territory would never be used as a base for attacks against China.
Spokeswoman Hua Chunying also urged the Taliban today to “keep a clear distance from international terrorist organizations” and “ensure that Afghanistan does not become a hotbed of terrorism and extremism again.”
