China “deeply sympathizes” with the people of the Gaza Strip, says foreign minister

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated, on Monday (23), in a phone call to the Foreign Minister of the Palestinian Authority, Riyad al-Maliki, that China “deeply sympathizes” with the people of the Gaza Strip.

“What the population of the Gaza Strip needs most is security, food and medicine, not war, weapons and ammunition; What Gaza needs is efforts to end war and promote peace, not geopolitical calculations,” Wang told al-Maliki, according to a reading published by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday (24 ).

He reiterated China’s support for a “two-state solution,” as he also did in a call with his Israeli counterpart on Monday.

Wang told a-Maliki that this is the “only way to resolve the Palestinian issue” and called for the convening of a “more authoritative, comprehensive and effective international peace conference as soon as possible.”

“The UN Security Council must shoulder its responsibility, the international community must act urgently, and countries outside the region, especially major powers, must be objective and impartial,” Wang added.
