China: Denies that Xi Jinping “spoiled” Trudeau at G20

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that the president Xi Jinping he did not criticize the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeauone day after Xi appeared to have a confrontation with Trudeau at the G20 summit about an alleged leak from the closed-door meeting they had on Tuesday.

Mao Ning, spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said Beijing supports frank talks as long as they are held on an equal footing, adding that China hopes Canada will take action to improve bilateral relations.

“The video you referred to was indeed a brief conversation between the leaders during its session G20. I do not believe that one should conclude that President Xi is criticizing or blaming anyoneMao pointed out.

In the video broadcast by Canadian networks on Wednesday, an interpreter for Xi can be heard telling Trudeau that “everything we talked about was leaked to the press, that’s not right.”

Xi continues in Mandarin saying, “if there is honesty, we can communicate well with mutual respect, otherwise it will not be easy to predict the outcome.”

The Chinese president’s displeasure was likely due to media reports, according to which Trudeau has expressed “serious concerns” over what he says is spying and “interference” in Canadian elections during his meeting with Xi on Tuesday.

“First of all I want to emphasize that China never interferes in the affairs of other countries,” Mao emphasized today. She did not clarify whether Trudeau’s reference to what she denounces as China’s interference was the reason for this confrontation between the two leaders.

Also, Mao stressed that Xi’s statement “otherwise it will not be easy to predict the outcome” was not a threat, as the two men were having a “normal” conversation and were merely “expressing their views.”

Old tensions

The tone of the conversation resembled that of “a ‘great’ power addressing a less great one” estimated Van Jackson, professor of international relations at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand.

Tuesday’s meeting between Xi and Trudeau was, as APE-MPE reports, the first face-to-face dialogue the two leaders have had since 2019.

Canadian federal police announced last Thursday that they are investigating “police stations” illegally set up by China in Canada to control mainly Chinese immigrants in the country.

Besides, the Canadian prime minister had declared last week that China is engaging in “aggressive games”, after the Canadian television network Global News reported that there was Chinese interference in the electoral process in Canada.

Relations between Beijing and Ottawa have deteriorated significantly in recent years, notably following the arrest in 2018 by Canadian authorities, at the request of the US, of Huawei’s chief financial officer.

Despite relative calm following her release last year, along with the two Canadians arrested by Beijing, bilateral tensions have flared again in recent weeks.
