China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not directly respond to a question about reports of alleged plans to open a spy base in Cuba, saying it was “not aware” of the situation. The agency also accused the United States of creating rumors, defaming and interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.
“The United States must reflect on itself and stop interfering in Cuba’s internal affairs under the banner of freedom, democracy and human rights,” spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Friday.
The spokesperson also encouraged Washington to immediately end the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.
Cuba denies reports of Chinese base
The vice-chancellor of Cuba, Carlos Fernández de Cossio, denied on Thursday (8) that China is installing a spy base in the Latin American country, after intelligence information from the United States indicated that the island had agreed to the construction.
At a press conference in Havana, Fernández de Cossio described the reports about the spy base as “totally false” and “slanderous”.
Earlier, two sources familiar with the intelligence told the CNN that Cuba had allowed China to build an espionage facility on the island that would allow the Chinese to spy on electronic communications throughout the southeastern US.
The United States has learned of the plan in recent weeks, one source said, and it is not clear whether China has yet started building the surveillance facility.
It wouldn’t be the first time China has tried to eavesdrop on US electronic communications, known as signals intelligence. An alleged Chinese spy balloon that transited the United States in February was able to collect intelligence signals and is believed to have transmitted them to Beijing in near real time, sources told CNN in season.
In that case, the United States took steps to secure sensitive locations and censor intelligence signals before bringing the balloon down. But it is unclear what the United States can do to stop the construction of a Chinese spy facility in Cuba.
O Wall Street Journal was the first to report new intelligence about the facility.
