China: elven ears, a new fashion for cosmetic surgery

A new trend is emerging in China: pointy ears, cut like those of a pixie or an elf and which give a thin and youthful effect to the face, reports International mail. A fashion phenomenon especially appreciated and shared on social networks by the generation born after 2000.

The trend is such that cosmetic surgery centers are experiencing very high demand, thus sometimes leading to the creation of waiting lists. Yu Wenlin, a surgeon in Guangzhou specializing in otoplasty, even claims to perform six elf ear surgeries a day. “Having more prominent ears gives a childish air”, he explains to justify the phenomenon.

China “at the head of world growth in cosmetic surgery”

Two possibilities are available to people who wish to have an operation: the placement of an implant or cartilage from the back of the ear, or the injection of hyaluronic acid. Surgery that involves risks, as is often the case, including possible allergies, infections, and even necrosis of the skin.

In China, the cosmetic surgery market is also experiencing very strong growth. The country is now “at the head of the global growth of cosmetic surgery”, according to research firm Deloitte. The market has thus grown from around 64.8 billion yuan in 2015, or 8.3 billion euros, to nearly 177 billion yuan in 2019, or 22.7 billion euros.
